I ran a practitioner training last week, and we were discussing how people tend to perceive their problems – or their ‘stuff’’.

Because when someone says to you ‘I’m a nervous driver’, ‘I’m depressed’ or even ‘I’m clumsy’, notice how that sounds. It almost sounds like an identity.
To use one of the examples above, the fact is they are not a nervous driver, they just ‘do’ nerves a little too well whilst they’re driving. You see, you can’t have a negative emotion without a thought preceding it. The driver has thought patterns (unconsciously) which cause them to feel nervous. And if you can do nerves well behind the wheel, by the same token, they could do confidence behind the wheel just as effectively.
You just need to interrupt and change the thought pattern – something we did numerous times last week as our practitioners let go of their stuff!
The key point here, is to catch yourself thinking, ‘Oh, that’s just me, I’m…(fill in the blank)’. The reality is it’s not ‘you’, just something you do. And if you can ‘do’ it, that means you can decide to change it. Knowing that is the first step.
